Cine vs Normal vs Sport: What Each Mavic 4 Pro Mode Actually Changes

Cine is not just slower — it remaps stick response and softens braking. Sport disables obstacle sensing entirely. Here is what each position really does.

You are set up for the shot. Golden light on a ridgeline, and all you want is a slow push toward a stand of pines. You flick the switch on the controller from N to C, because that is what everyone told you to do for cinematic footage. The drone gets slower. The footage is still jerky. And now you are wondering what Cine mode actually did, other than make the whole thing take longer.

The C-N-S switch is not a quality dial. It is a flight envelope selector. It changes speed, yes, but it also changes how your stick inputs are interpreted, how hard the aircraft brakes when you let go, and in one position it turns off obstacle sensing entirely. Knowing exactly what each position does is the difference between using the switch as a tool and using it as a superstition.

What the three positions actually are

Normal is the default flight envelope. GNSS plus the vision system, obstacle sensing active in all directions, full access to intelligent flight modes, and the balance of responsiveness and stability DJI expects most people to fly in most of the time.

Sport raises the ceiling. Higher top speed, higher ascent and descent rates, and noticeably sharper control response — the same stick deflection produces a much larger aircraft movement. It also removes safety nets, which we will get to.

Cine is built on top of Normal. DJI's own manual describes it as Normal mode with a limited flight speed, making the aircraft more stable during recording. That phrasing matters. Cine is not a separate flight controller personality. It is the Normal envelope with the limits pulled in.

The numbers DJI publishes, and the ones it does not

Here is where accuracy matters more than completeness. DJI's published specification sheet for the Mavic 4 Pro breaks out ascent and descent speed by mode, but publishes horizontal speed only for Sport mode. There is no official Normal or Cine horizontal figure in the spec sheet. Anyone who quotes you an exact number for Cine mode horizontal speed on this airframe is either reading it off a different drone's spec sheet or guessing.

Two things on that table deserve emphasis. Ascent and descent are identical between Cine and Normal — 6 m/s in both. If you assumed Cine was throttling your vertical moves, it is not. And braking distance grows with altitude. The higher you are, the thinner the air, the longer it takes to stop, regardless of which mode you picked.

Cine mode is not just slower

This is the part that gets lost. If Cine only reduced your top speed, you could replicate it perfectly by flying Normal mode and being gentle with the sticks. You cannot, and here is why.

Cine changes the mapping between stick position and commanded velocity. In Normal mode, a small stick input produces a proportionally meaningful acceleration command. In Cine, the same physical deflection is interpreted against a compressed velocity range, so the usable travel of the stick is spread across a much narrower band of speeds. You get finer resolution. A millimeter of thumb movement that would have been a lurch in Normal becomes a barely perceptible drift in Cine.

It also softens the acceleration ramp on both ends. The aircraft takes longer to reach commanded speed, and — critically — it decelerates more gently when you center the sticks. That deceleration behavior is why Cine footage does not have the characteristic snap-stop at the end of a move. In Normal mode, releasing the sticks commands an aggressive stop. The nose pitches back to arrest momentum, the horizon dips, and your gimbal has to correct for an attitude change it did not ask for.

The gimbal itself does not change between modes. There is no separate Cine gimbal profile. What changes is how much airframe motion the gimbal has to reject. Fewer sharp attitude changes means less stabilization work, which means fewer of the small corrections that show up in footage as a subtle swim or wobble. Cine mode improves your gimbal output indirectly, by giving it an easier job.

Sport mode turns your obstacle sensing off

This is not a partial reduction and it is not a "reduced sensitivity" situation. DJI's manual for the Mavic 4 Pro states plainly that the vision system is disabled in Sport mode, which means the aircraft cannot sense obstacles on its route automatically.

In Sport mode your Mavic 4 Pro requires a minimum braking distance of 30 meters in windless conditions — and it cannot see what is inside those 30 meters. You are flying a 25 m/s aircraft with no obstacle sensing and the length of a basketball court between the stick input and the stop. Sport is for open sky. It is not for treelines, and it is not for getting home faster when you are low on battery near terrain.

That combination is the single most expensive misunderstanding in consumer drone flying. People flip to Sport to cover distance quickly, forget the sensors are off, and discover the geometry of the situation the hard way.

Gain and EXP: the lever that actually matters

The C-N-S switch gives you three presets. Under the Control section of the app settings, DJI exposes the parameters those presets are built from — the gain and expo tuning controls, covering maximum speeds, exponential response curves for pitch, roll and yaw, and braking sensitivity. DJI has renamed and relocated this section across app versions, so look under Control rather than hunting for a specific label.

This is a more powerful lever than the mode switch, because it is continuous rather than a three-position choice. If Cine mode feels too slow but Normal feels twitchy, you do not have to accept either. Lower the EXP curve values in Normal mode and you get Normal's speed ceiling with Cine's fine control near center stick. Reduce brake sensitivity and you get softer stops without giving up top speed. Most pilots who complain that Cine is unusably slow actually want a tuned Normal mode.

Worth saying clearly: neither the mode switch nor the tuning menu is a substitute for stick technique. Cine mode makes a bad input less visible. It does not make it a good input. If you jab the stick and release it abruptly, Cine will smooth the edges and the move will still read as a jab. The pilots whose footage looks effortless are applying pressure gradually, holding it steady through the middle of the move, and easing off before the stop — and they get results in Normal mode that most people cannot get in Cine.

Which mode for which shot

  • Slow reveals, close-quarters orbits, dolly moves near objects. Cine. Anywhere the frame contains something close enough that small speed errors are visible, the compressed stick range earns its keep.
  • Pull-outs and rises over open landscape. Normal. The subject is far enough away that Cine's speed limit costs you distance without buying visible smoothness, and you keep obstacle sensing.
  • Tracking a moving subject. Normal. You need headroom to keep up, and you badly want the sensors on.
  • Repositioning between setups over open ground, or fighting a headwind home. Sport. Eyes on the aircraft, nothing in the flight path, and remember that maximum wind resistance is 12 m/s.
  • Anything near trees, wires, structures or terrain. Normal or Cine. Never Sport.
  • Learning a new move. Cine, then repeat it in Normal once the shape is in your hands. Our guide to cinematic drone moves for beginners covers the moves worth drilling.

One regional note: on EU-configured aircraft, the C position engages a low speed mode that limits horizontal flight to 2.8 m/s. That is dramatically slower than Cine behaves elsewhere, and it surprises people who bought the drone in one region and fly it in another.

If your switch reads F-N-S

On DJI's Enterprise airframes the switch is labeled F-N-S rather than C-N-S, and the F does not stand for Film. It stands for Function mode, a user-assignable slot that you configure in DJI Pilot 2 as either Tripod mode or Attitude mode. Tripod behaves roughly like Cine — reduced speed for precise control. Attitude mode is something else entirely: DJI's manual states that the vision systems are disabled and the aircraft cannot position itself or brake automatically.

So an Enterprise pilot flipping to F may be entering a slow, forgiving mode or a fast, unforgiving one, depending on what is assigned. If you have moved between consumer and Enterprise hardware and the labeling threw you, we cover it in detail in why your mode switch says F-N-S instead of C-N-S.
