Intelligent Orientation Control (IOC): Course Lock and Home Lock Explained

What IOC actually did, why DJI retired it, and the modern features that replaced it on the Mavic 4 Pro.

You're 400 feet out, the drone is a speck against a gray sky, and you've lost track of which way the nose is pointing. You push the right stick left expecting the aircraft to come back toward you. It goes further away. Your stomach drops, and for a second you genuinely don't know which input will fix it.

Every pilot who has flown beyond comfortable visual range has had this moment. It is the single most common way people crash drones that are otherwise flying perfectly. And it is the exact problem DJI built Intelligent Orientation Control to solve — a feature that most pilots searching for it today will not find on their aircraft, because DJI quietly retired it.

Here is what IOC was, why it existed, and what you should actually be using on a Mavic 4 Pro.

The problem IOC was built to fix

A multirotor's controls are relative to the aircraft, not to you. Push the pitch stick forward and the drone moves in whatever direction its nose happens to be pointing. When the nose is pointing away from you, that feels natural — forward is forward. When the drone has yawed 180 degrees and is facing back at you, every input inverts. Left is right. Forward is toward your face.

At 50 feet you can see the orientation and compensate. At 1,500 feet in flat light, you cannot. The aircraft is a dot. You have no visual cue for heading, and the instinct to yank a stick in the direction you want it to go is exactly the instinct that puts it into a tree line.

Intelligent Orientation Control was DJI's answer: decouple the control inputs from the nose direction entirely. Instead of "forward means where the nose points," IOC redefined forward as a fixed reference the pilot chose in advance. The nose could point anywhere. The sticks still did what you expected.

Course Lock and Home Lock: the two flavors

IOC was never one mode. It was two, and they solved different problems.

Course Lock recorded the aircraft's heading at the moment you engaged it and locked that as "forward" for the rest of the flight. Push the pitch stick forward and the drone tracked along that recorded bearing regardless of where the nose was aimed. This was a creative tool as much as a safety one — it let you fly a dead-straight line past a subject while yawing the aircraft to keep the camera on it. The classic parallax reveal.

Home Lock redefined forward as "directly away from the recorded home point." Pull the pitch stick back and the aircraft came toward home, no matter which way it was facing. That is the panic button. On the models that offered it, Home Lock typically required the aircraft to be some distance from home before it would engage — around ten meters on the Phantom-era firmware — because the reference vector becomes meaningless when you're hovering directly over the home point.

Worth noting: neither was ever standard equipment across the whole DJI range. Availability varied by model and by app version even during the years IOC was actively supported, and it always lived behind a settings menu rather than on the flight mode switch.

Does the Mavic 4 Pro have IOC?

No. There is no Course Lock and no Home Lock on the Mavic 4 Pro.

The official Mavic 4 Pro user manual makes no mention of Intelligent Orientation Control, Course Lock, or Home Lock anywhere. The intelligent flight modes it does document are FocusTrack, MasterShots, QuickShots, Hyperlapse, Waypoint Flight, and Cruise Control. The flight mode switch gives you Normal, Sport, and Cine. That's the list.

This is not a Mavic 4 Pro omission specifically. IOC belonged to the DJI GO and GO 4 era — the Phantom line, the Inspire 1, the original Mavic Pro. When DJI moved its consumer fleet onto the DJI Fly app starting with the Mavic Air 2, the lock modes did not come with it. Mavic Air 2 owners raised it at the time and were told plainly that the functions were not supported by the aircraft firmware. Third-party apps couldn't restore what the firmware no longer exposed.

If you're searching your Mavic 4 Pro menus for IOC, stop. It isn't buried in an advanced settings page or hidden behind a firmware toggle. It does not exist on the aircraft. Any tutorial that walks you through enabling Course Lock on a current DJI consumer drone is describing an older model, an older app, or is simply wrong.

Why DJI retired it

IOC solved a 2014 problem with 2014 hardware. Almost everything that made it necessary has since been engineered away.

Return to Home got dramatically better. Home Lock existed because RTH on early aircraft was slow, dumb about obstacles, and something you hesitated to trigger. On a Mavic 4 Pro, RTH is a single button, the aircraft plans a route, and omnidirectional obstacle sensing handles what's in the way. The panic-button use case has a better panic button now.

The map improved too. The DJI Fly flight interface shows aircraft position and heading in real time, so "I don't know which way it's facing" is now a glance at the screen rather than a guess. Add the transmission range and clarity of modern video links and you rarely lose the orientation picture in the first place.

And the cinematic use case got better tools. Course Lock's real value was flying a straight line while the camera looked somewhere else. That is now handled by purpose-built features rather than a control-mapping trick.

What to use instead on a Mavic 4 Pro

Cruise Control is the closest modern analog to Course Lock. You assign it to a customizable button in the app's control settings, start the aircraft moving on the line you want, then press the button. The current speed and direction lock in — the speed indicators shift to show the lock — and your hands are free to yaw the aircraft, adjust the gimbal, or change altitude while the flight path holds. Press again to release. It gives you the parallax shot without redefining your entire stick mapping.

Waypoint Flight handles the case where you want a repeatable, precise path with heading and gimbal angle controlled independently at every point. If your reason for wanting Course Lock is a specific line past a specific subject, waypoints will do it more accurately and let you fly it again. Spotlight in particular is the direct replacement for manually yawing during a Course Lock pass — the camera stays locked on the subject while you fly freely. Return to Home replaces Home Lock outright. Set an accurate home point before takeoff, confirm your RTH altitude clears the tallest obstacle in your area, and treat the button as the recovery tool. That check belongs in your pre-flight routine, not something you work out mid-panic.

If you still fly an older DJI drone

If you're on a Phantom, an Inspire 1, or an original Mavic Pro running DJI GO 4, the lock modes may still be there — they lived under the intelligent flight modes section of the app rather than on the physical flight mode switch. Because the menu layout differs across models and app versions, check your specific aircraft's manual rather than trusting a generic walkthrough.

A few things worth knowing on models that still offer it. Both modes depend on a solid GPS lock and a properly calibrated compass; a drifting compass will drift your locked reference along with it. Course Lock records its bearing at the moment of engagement, so if you engage it while pointing the wrong way, you've locked in the wrong "forward." And the modes are disorienting to switch out of mid-flight — the moment you disengage, control mapping snaps back to nose-relative, which catches people out.

The broader point stands for any modern DJI aircraft: the feature you were looking for isn't missing, it's been replaced by better ones.
