FocusTrack Is Unavailable in the Current Recording Format: How to Fix It

Why DJI disables subject tracking at high frame rates and rich codecs, the fastest way to get it back, and how to find your own aircraft's cutoff.

You dragged the box around the car. Nothing locked. Instead DJI Fly threw a message at you: FocusTrack is unavailable in the current recording format. The tracking icon is grayed out, the aircraft just hovers, and the shot you flew out here to get is not happening.

Nothing is broken. You have asked the same processor to do two expensive jobs at once, and it picked the one you told it to prioritize when you chose your recording format.

What the message actually means

The wording changes depending on your aircraft and app version. You may see any of these:

  • Unable to use FocusTrack in the current recording format
  • FocusTrack is unavailable in the current recording format
  • Focus Track not supported
  • FocusTrack is not available in the current video mode

They all mean one thing: the resolution, frame rate, codec, or color profile you selected consumes enough of the imaging pipeline that the aircraft will not also run subject tracking. It is a capability lockout, not a fault.

Fix it right now

Do this in order. Stop as soon as the tracking icon comes back to life.

  1. Make sure you are actually in the air. FocusTrack does not arm while the aircraft is on the ground. This catches more pilots than the format issue does.
  2. Leave Slow Motion mode. Tap the shooting mode selector on the right of the camera view and go back to Normal video. Slow Motion runs the aircraft's highest frame rates, so rule it out first.
  3. Drop to 4K/30. Not 60, not 120 — 30 or 25fps depending on your region. To be certain, go to 1080p/30.
  4. Switch the color mode to Normal. Come off D-Log, D-Log M, and HLG for the moment.
  5. Switch the codec to H.264 or H.265. If you are on the 512GB Creator Combo and shooting H.264 ALL-I, you are writing up to 1200 Mbps. Come off it.
  6. Re-frame the subject. Drag a box around it rather than tapping.

1080p/30 in Normal color with H.265 is the safest combination on any DJI aircraft, and on the Mavic 4 Pro 4K/30 is normally fine too. If tracking still refuses at those settings, your problem is not the recording format, and the last section of this post covers what it is instead.

Change the format before you frame the subject, not after. Switching resolution or shooting mode while a subject is locked drops the lock, and on some firmware versions it also ends the current recording clip. Set the format, take off, then acquire the subject.

Why high frame rates and rich codecs disable tracking

Subject tracking is computer vision. To follow a moving car, the aircraft runs object detection and re-identification on the live image stream, cross-references depth data from the vision systems, and feeds the result to the flight controller and gimbal — dozens of times per second, against a hard real-time deadline. Miss the deadline and the aircraft loses the subject or flies somewhere you did not intend.

That work runs on the same silicon that has to debayer, process, and encode your video. At 4K/30 in a compressed 8-bit format, there is plenty of headroom for both. At 4K/120 there is not. You have quadrupled the frames per second the encoder must chew through, and every one of those frames is competing for the same bandwidth the tracking model needs.

Resolution, bit depth, and codec stack on top of that. 6K is roughly 2.4 times the pixels of 4K. 10-bit carries 25 percent more data per pixel than 8-bit before compression, and the log and HLG profiles live in those heavier 10-bit pipelines. ALL-I compresses every frame independently instead of leaning on inter-frame prediction, which is why it produces enormous files and enormous encoder load. Push enough of those levers at once and something has to give. DJI gives up tracking rather than drop frames or overheat the aircraft, which is the right call — a stuttering track at altitude is a safety problem, a dropped frame in a slow motion clip is not.

It is a budget, not a single clean line — which is why 4K/60 may track on one aircraft and not another.

What DJI has actually documented

DJI documents these restrictions inconsistently across models, and for the Mavic 4 Pro it has not published a format-by-format table at all. Here is the honest state of it.

Mavic 3 ProDJI's own user manual states FocusTrack is disabled in Explore mode, when recording in 5.1K, at 120fps and above, and in Apple ProRes 422 HQ / 422 / 422 LT. It is also unsupported in Night mode and while the aircraft is on the ground.
Mini 3 ProWidely published dealer and knowledge-base lists put FocusTrack out of reach across all 4K frame rates, 2.7K at 48/50/60fps, and 1080p at 48/50/60/120fps — a far more aggressive lockout, consistent with a smaller aircraft and a lighter processor.
Mavic 4 ProNo equivalent list exists in the current user manual. The FocusTrack section covers subject types, lighting, and environment — not recording formats. The restriction is real and pilots hit it, but DJI has not spelled out the exact combinations in print.

We are not going to invent a Mavic 4 Pro table DJI has not published. What we can tell you is which of its modes are the heavy ones, and how to find your own cutoff.

Find your own cutoff in two minutes

The Mavic 4 Pro's Hasselblad camera records 6K up to 60fps, DCI 4K and 4K up to 120fps, and 1080p up to 60fps. The medium tele goes to 4K/120, the tele to 4K/100. All three cameras support Normal, D-Log, D-Log M, and HLG, in 10-bit, with H.264, H.265, and H.264 ALL-I options depending on your combo.

The high-load candidates are obvious from that list: anything in Slow Motion, 6K at 50 or 60, 4K at 100 or 120, ALL-I, and the 10-bit log and HLG profiles. To map it for your firmware, hover at a safe altitude over an empty area and work through this:

  1. Start at 4K/30, Normal color, H.265. Confirm the FocusTrack icon is available.
  2. Change one variable. Go to 4K/60. Check the icon.
  3. Change it back, then change a different one. Go to 4K/30 in D-Log M. Check the icon.
  4. Repeat for 6K/30, 6K/60, ALL-I, and Slow Motion.
  5. Write down the last combination that kept tracking available. That is your ceiling until the next firmware update — and updates do sometimes move it.

When it is not the recording format

If you have dropped to 4K/30 in Normal color and the tracking icon is still dead or the subject will not lock, work through these:

  • The aircraft is on the ground. Worth repeating. Take off first.
  • The subject is not a supported type. The Mavic 4 Pro tracks people, vehicles, and small to medium boats. A dog, a horse, or a distant motorcycle will often refuse to lock. Automatic Movement is narrower still — vehicles and people only.
  • The light is wrong. Below roughly 5 lux or above 10,000 lux the vision systems degrade. In low light, Spotlight and POI may still work on static subjects while ActiveTrack will not.
  • You are at a flight boundary. Near a GEO Zone edge or your altitude or distance limit, FocusTrack can refuse outright.
  • The subject is out of range. ActiveTrack has minimum and maximum distance and altitude windows. Too close and too far both fail.
  • Vision systems are obstructed. Dirty or fogged vision lenses, or a propeller guard, will quietly break tracking.

Spotlight, Point of Interest, and ActiveTrack have different requirements and different failure modes, so a subject that will not hold in one may hold in another. Our guide to the Mavic 4 Pro tracking modes covers which to reach for when.

Getting the slow motion shot anyway

If you genuinely need 4K/120 of a subject in motion, you have three options and none of them involve tracking.

Fly it manually. A slow, deliberate parallel push at 120fps often looks better in the edit than an ActiveTrack move anyway, because tracking makes constant small corrections that read as nervous when slowed down.

Or fly the move twice: one pass with tracking at 4K/30 to guarantee you have the shot, one hand-flown pass at 4K/120 for the hero slow motion. Batteries are cheaper than a wasted trip.

Or pre-plan the path. A waypoint mission gives you a repeatable, machine-smooth camera move at any format the aircraft supports, because the path is computed in advance rather than reacted to in real time. For a subject on a known route — a car on a road, a boat in a channel — a waypoint pass timed to the subject beats ActiveTrack and lets you shoot at whatever frame rate you want.
