The 51-minute figure is measured hovering in still air. Here is what you get in the real world, and how many spares that implies.
DJI says 51 minutes. You are getting somewhere in the low thirties, and you are wondering whether your battery is faulty, whether you were sold a lie, or whether you are simply flying wrong.
None of the above. The 51-minute figure is real, it is just measured under conditions you will never fly in — a windless hover at a constant altitude, no aggressive stick input, and no recording. It is a benchmark, not a forecast. Every manufacturer publishes one and every one of them is optimistic in the same way.
Where the missing twenty minutes goes
Wind is the big one. Holding position against a breeze means the aircraft is constantly working. It is not hovering; it is flying into the wind at exactly the speed the wind is pushing it back. A 10 mph breeze you barely notice at ground level can be considerably stronger at 200 feet, and the aircraft pays for every minute of it.
Movement costs more than hovering. Accelerating, climbing, and braking all draw far more current than holding still. A flight full of dynamic moves will land meaningfully sooner than a flight of slow pushes.
Cold is brutal and non-linear. Lithium cells lose usable capacity as internal resistance rises with falling temperature. Below roughly 5°C you should plan on losing a substantial chunk of duration, and the aircraft may reduce available power mid-flight to protect the pack. This is not a defect; it is chemistry.
And you should be landing early anyway. Flying to the warning is flying without a reserve. Land at 25 to 30 percent and you have given up perhaps six minutes of headline number in exchange for the ability to handle a headwind or a diversion.
A realistic planning figure for the Mavic 4 Pro is 30 to 38 minutes of usable flight per pack in mild conditions with a sensible reserve — and noticeably less in wind or cold. Build your day around that number, not the one on the box.
How many spares you actually need

Lithium polymer cells age fastest at a full state of charge. A pack left at 100 percent for a month loses measurably more capacity than the same pack left at 50 percent — which is why DJI batteries self-discharge to a storage level after a set idle period. That behaviour is a feature. Do not defeat it by topping them up out of habit.
The rules that actually matter:
- Charge to full the night before you fly, not days in advance.
- Store around 40 to 60 percent if the drone is going in a cupboard for a while.
- Never store a pack fully discharged. Deep discharge can take a cell below the voltage from which it can safely recover.
- Let a pack cool before charging it. Charging a hot battery straight off a flight accelerates wear.
- Retire a swollen pack immediately. Swelling is gas from cell breakdown. There is no fix and no safe way to keep using it.

Cheap insurance. Drone batteries are lithium polymer and they do occasionally vent; storing and charging them inside a fire-retardant bag costs about as much as a couple of coffees.

Each Mavic 4 Pro Intelligent Flight Battery is 95.3 Wh, which sits just under the 100 Wh threshold that triggers airline approval requirements. In practice that means: carry-on only, never checked, terminals covered, each pack individually protected against short circuit, and discharged to around 30 percent for travel.
Airlines apply their own limits on top of the international rules — commonly a cap on the number of spare packs per passenger — so check your specific carrier rather than assuming. Turning up at security with six loose batteries in a rucksack is a conversation you do not want to have.
Cold weather, specifically
- Warm the packs before takeoff. Inside your jacket, against your body, for fifteen minutes. A pack at body temperature will outperform one at ambient by a wide margin.
- Hover for a minute before you fly out. Working the pack gently raises its internal temperature and stabilises voltage before you ask it for anything demanding.
- Land earlier than you think. Voltage sag under load is far more abrupt when cold, and the percentage readout can fall off a cliff rather than declining smoothly.
- Keep the spares warm too. A cold spare is not a fresh spare.
