Mavic 4 Pro Explore Mode and Deep Zoom: What It Is, When to Use It

What Explore Mode was on the Mavic 3, what the Mavic 4 Pro actually gives you across three cameras, and the five jobs deep zoom is genuinely right for.

You are three hundred feet up and something on the far ridge has your attention. A structure, maybe. A trail cut. A shape moving along the treeline. You roll the camera control dial and the frame closes in, then closes in again, and by the time the subject fills the screen it looks like it was painted with a wet brush. Soft. Smeary. Swimming every time the wind touches the aircraft. You can tell what it is. You would never publish it.

That is not a defect. That is exactly what the long end of the range is for, and most pilots have it backward.

What Explore Mode is, and where it came from

Explore Mode, which DJI's help center also spells explorer mode, arrived with the Mavic 3 series as a separate zoom behavior layered on top of normal photo and video mode. It opened up the full reach of the telephoto camera plus a large digital crop on top of that, in stepped increments. On the original Mavic 3, DJI documents those steps as 1x, 2x, 4x, 7x, 14x, and 28x.

The design intent was never final footage. It was a spotting scope bolted to a flying camera. You used it to answer a question about something far away, then flew closer and shot it properly, or moved on.

DJI's own zoom documentation scopes the feature narrowly: "Zoom range and operations differ between normal photo mode, video mode, and explorer mode on DJI Mavic 3 series."

What the Mavic 4 Pro actually gives you

DJI documents the Mavic 4 Pro's zoom as one continuous ladder handed off across the three cameras, not as a separate explorer mode. The published ranges:

Read the multipliers as a ratio against the 28mm wide camera, because that is where they are anchored. 70mm divided by 28mm is 2.5. 168mm divided by 28mm is 6. The three real points on that ladder are 1x, 2.5x, and 6x, the moments the aircraft hands you to the next lens. Everything in between, and everything past 6x, is a crop.

At the top of the range, 24x works out to roughly a 670mm equivalent field of view. That is enormous reach for a folding drone. It is also a 4x linear crop out of the tele camera's native framing, which means you are looking at about one sixteenth of the sensor area, blown back up to fill your screen.

The working rule: zoom to see, move to shoot. Use the long end to decide where the aircraft should be. Then put the aircraft there and shoot at 1x, 2.5x, or 6x. Every frame you deliver should come from one of those three native positions if you can possibly manage it.

Where the image quality actually goes

None of the three cameras zooms optically. There are no moving lens groups. What the aircraft calls zoom is a crop plus upscaling, and the cost compounds three ways.

  • You throw away pixels. A 4x linear crop keeps one sixteenth of the frame area, and detail that was never captured cannot be invented on the way back up to 4K.
  • Noise gets magnified with everything else. The tele camera has a 1/1.5-type sensor behind a fixed f/2.8 lens. Crop hard into that in anything but bright daylight and grain becomes the dominant texture in the frame.
  • The atmosphere gets in the way. At 670mm equivalent you are shooting through a half mile or more of air, and heat shimmer, haze, and humidity all sit between you and the subject. No sensor fixes that. On a hot afternoon over pavement, the ridge you are inspecting will wobble like it is underwater.

For stills there is a better move almost every time. Shoot at native 6x and crop in post. You keep the full-resolution file, and you are cropping real captured detail rather than an in-camera upscale. For video there is no such rescue, because the crop is baked in at the moment of recording.

What extreme zoom does to your flying

The magnification applies to your mistakes too. At 24x, a yaw input that feels gentle on the sticks becomes a violent pan on screen, and a gust you would not notice at 1x turns into a visible shudder. Holding a stable frame on a distant subject becomes a matter of patience, because you are constantly correcting drift you can barely feel through the controller.

There is a safety dimension too, and it catches experienced pilots. Staring at a magnified frame a half mile out is not the same as knowing where your aircraft is. The screen shows you the ridge. It does not show you the tree or the wire near the drone. You are still responsible for visual line of sight with the aircraft itself, not with whatever the lens is pointed at.

What it disables

On the Mavic 3 series this is well established. Explore Mode disabled FocusTrack entirely, so Spotlight, Point of Interest, and ActiveTrack all went away while it was active. Pilots also reported a 30fps cap and reduced access to advanced photo and video formats. That is consistent with the mode's purpose: a viewfinder feature, not a capture feature.

For the Mavic 4 Pro specifically, we could not verify an equivalent disable list, because DJI does not document a separate Explore Mode for the aircraft at all. The user manual makes no mention of it, and DJI's help center scopes explorer mode to the Mavic 3 series while describing the Mavic 4 Pro's zoom purely as the three continuous ranges above.

So test it yourself before you need it. Zoom in, try to acquire a subject, and see whether the aircraft lets you. Do not assume tracking will hold at 20x because it held at 1x. Our Mavic 4 Pro ActiveTrack guide covers how tracking behaves and what breaks it.

When the long end is genuinely the right tool

Used as a spotting instrument rather than a camera, deep zoom earns its place.

  1. Scouting before you commit battery. Three candidate compositions two thousand feet apart, and a finite number of usable minutes. Zoom in from where you are, pick the one worth the flight, and go.
  2. Checking an obstacle before you enter its airspace. Guy-wires on a tower, an unmarked span between poles, a crane cable, scaffolding on the far side of a building. Look before you fly into it. This is the best safety use of the long lens.
  3. Reading something at distance. A gate sign, a trail marker, a posted closure. Knowing whether an area is restricted before you fly over it is worth a smeary frame.
  4. Wildlife, at a distance that leaves it alone. Here the degraded image is the entire point. Drone noise stresses animals and can flush nesting birds. If the choice is a soft frame from far away or a sharp frame from close enough to disturb the subject, take the soft frame. Check local rules too, since wildlife harassment provisions apply to drones in many parks and refuges.
  5. Inspection from a legal standoff. Roof edges, chimney flashing, a fence line across a property you cannot overfly. Nobody needs these to be beautiful. They need to be legible.

What we could not confirm

We would rather leave a gap than fill it with a guess. Plainly:

  • We could not confirm that DJI Fly presents a control labeled Explore Mode on the Mavic 4 Pro. DJI's published documentation attaches that name to the Mavic 3 series only, and describes the Mavic 4 Pro's zoom as the continuous 1x to 24x ladder across three cameras.
  • We could not confirm any Mavic 4 Pro maximum zoom beyond the documented 24x. If you see a larger number quoted somewhere, check which aircraft it belongs to. The Mavic 3 Pro, for example, is documented at 7x to 28x on its tele camera, which is a different figure attached to a different lens.
  • We could not confirm a Mavic 4 Pro specific list of features suspended at high zoom, so we have not invented one.

Firmware moves, and DJI has renamed and re-scoped zoom behavior across model generations more than once. If your aircraft is on newer firmware than the documentation reflects, trust what the app shows you over what any article says, including this one.
