Mavic 4 Pro Internal Storage: 64GB vs 512GB, Cards, and Getting Footage Off
Why the Creator Combo can record a format the base aircraft cannot, what each mode costs per minute, and the fastest way to offload.
You land after a good session. Golden hour, clean light, the shot you drove two hours for. You pop the microSD out, walk it over to the laptop, slot it into the reader. Empty. Not corrupted, not unreadable. Just empty. And somewhere in the back of your mind you remember the aircraft asking you something on the second startup, and you remember tapping past it.
The footage isn't gone. It's sitting in the drone's internal storage, which is a thing the Mavic 4 Pro has and a thing most people forget about until it bites them. Here's how that storage actually works, what it can and can't record, and how to get files off it without wasting an evening.
You have 64GB or 512GB, and the difference is bigger than the number
DJI ships the Mavic 4 Pro in two storage configurations, and which one you own changes what the aircraft can record.
The standard Mavic 4 Pro — the base aircraft and the Fly More Combo — has 64GB of internal storage built into the airframe. The 512GB Creator Combo has, per DJI's own specifications, a 512GB SSD, described in retailer spec sheets as allowing high-bitrate H.264 ALL-I recording.
That's not a marketing distinction. It's the reason the Creator Combo can record a format the 64GB aircraft simply cannot.
An honest gap: DJI does not publicly label the 64GB internal storage as eMMC in its published specifications. It's referred to as internal storage. The 512GB version is explicitly called an SSD. Everything below about the practical difference between the two holds regardless of the exact silicon, but we're not going to state a part type DJI hasn't confirmed.
Why the storage type decides what you can record
Every video codec has a bitrate — how much data per second it writes. If your storage can't absorb data that fast, sustained, the recording stops or the file drops frames. This is the entire reason storage class matters.
The Mavic 4 Pro's published maximum bitrates:
- H.264 standard: 90 Mbps
- H.265 standard: 180 Mbps
- H.264 ALL-I: 1200 Mbps
That last number is the one worth staring at. 1200 Mbps is 150 megabytes every second, sustained, for as long as you hold the record button. ALL-I encodes every frame as a complete standalone image instead of storing differences between frames, which is fantastic for editing and brutal on storage.
DJI states that only the Mavic 4 Pro 512GB Creator Combo supports H.264 ALL-I recording. The SSD is why.
What each mode costs you per minute
The GB-per-minute figures below are calculated directly from DJI's published bitrates, not measured from files. Real footage varies a little with scene complexity, but this is close enough to plan a shoot around.

Run the numbers on the 64GB aircraft. At H.265's 180 Mbps, 64GB holds roughly 48 minutes of video. That is less than one battery set. At H.264's 90 Mbps you get somewhere near 95 minutes. Neither is a day of shooting.
On the Creator Combo, 512GB at ALL-I's 1200 Mbps works out to roughly 57 minutes. Half a terabyte of SSD, and under an hour of footage. That's what 1200 Mbps costs.
Why internal storage fills up without you noticing
Internal storage has no physical presence. There's no card to eject, no card to look at, no moment where you hold the thing in your hand and think about how full it is. It only exists as a menu item, and menu items are easy to skip past.
Two behaviors compound this. First, when no card is inserted, the aircraft records internally — that's the entire point of shipping with onboard storage, so you can fly the day you unbox it. Second, when a card is inserted, pilots report the aircraft prompting at startup about which storage to use. Tap through that prompt in a hurry and you may not be recording where you assume.
Owners on the Mavic forums report a storage preference setting exists to set a default location, but we could not verify the exact menu path in current DJI Fly firmware, and firmware moves. Rather than print a path that might be wrong, check your storage location in the camera settings before you launch and confirm the readout says what you expect. The habit that actually prevents this: glance at the remaining-capacity readout on the controller before the first takeoff of every session. If it says 61GB free and you're expecting 240GB free, you're pointed at internal storage.
Getting the footage off
Three routes, and they are not equivalent.
QuickTransfer over Wi-Fi
The aircraft connects directly to your phone over Wi-Fi 6, no controller needed. DJI rates it at up to 80 MB/s. In DJI Fly, enable QuickTransfer in the camera settings, make sure your phone has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Location on, tap the QuickTransfer card on the app home screen, then hold the aircraft's power button for about three seconds to confirm pairing. Files come off through the app's Album.
Treat 80 MB/s as a ceiling under good conditions, not a promise. It's genuinely useful for pulling a handful of clips for a client preview from the tailgate. It is not how you move 200GB.
USB-C cable to a computer
Plug the aircraft into a computer and it mounts as a drive. This is the only way to reach internal storage from a desktop, and the speed depends almost entirely on your cable.
Owners moving files off Creator Combo aircraft report a wide spread — some seeing roughly 35 to 50 MB/s, others reporting far higher throughput after switching to a properly rated USB 3.2 cable. The pattern in those reports is consistent: a cable that only carries USB 2.0 data lines will charge your drone perfectly and transfer footage terribly. If your offload is crawling, change the cable before you blame the drone.
Card reader
Pull the microSD, put it in a UHS-II reader, copy at the card's native speed. This is the fastest and most reliable option, and it's the one professionals default to. It also only works for footage that went to the card — which loops back to knowing where you recorded.
What card you actually need
DJI's listed requirement for the Mavic 4 Pro is microSD, microSDHC or microSDXC, Class 10 / U3 / V30 or faster recommended.
V30 means the card sustains at least 30 MB/s of writes. The Mavic 4 Pro's highest card-eligible mode is H.265 at 180 Mbps, which is 22.5 MB/s. V30 clears that with margin, and that margin is the point — sustained write speed sags as cards fill and heat up, so you want headroom rather than an exact match.
Buying a V60 or V90 card won't unlock ALL-I on a 64GB aircraft. That mode is a Creator Combo capability, not a card capability. What a faster card does buy you is quicker offload through a reader and more comfort at high frame rates. Note also that for a codec running at 150 MB/s sustained, even a V90 card's 90 MB/s guarantee falls short — which tells you plainly why that format lives on the internal SSD. One more thing worth verifying yourself: maximum supported card capacity. Third-party sources cite 1TB, but we could not confirm that figure against DJI's published specification, so check DJI's compatible-card list before spending on a very large card.
Planning storage for an actual shoot
Work backward from minutes, not gigabytes.
- Estimate recorded minutes. Not flight minutes. If you fly six batteries and actually roll on maybe a third of that, you're looking at roughly 90 minutes of recording.
- Multiply by your mode. 90 minutes of H.265 is about 120GB. The same 90 minutes in ALL-I is about 810GB, which is more than the Creator Combo's entire SSD.
- Treat internal storage as overflow, not primary. Record to a card by default. Internal is your backup when a card fails, fills, or gets left on the kitchen counter.
- Offload between battery swaps. If you're shooting ALL-I, you will hit the SSD ceiling inside a single session. A laptop and a good USB-C cable in the bag is not optional at that bitrate.
- Format in the aircraft, not the computer. Formatting through the drone's own menu produces the file structure it expects.
The core discipline is simple. Know which storage you're writing to before you take off, and know how many minutes that storage holds in the mode you've selected. Internal storage on this aircraft is a genuinely useful safety net. It becomes a problem only when you don't know you're using it.
