Mavic 4 Pro Waypoint Errors: FWD/BKWD Unavailable and Missions That Won't Save

FWD and BKWD unavailable has nothing to do with flight direction — it means your vision sensors are offline. Here is the five-minute diagnostic.

You planned the route on the map. You tapped the waypoints, set the altitudes, framed the shot in your head. Then you hit save and nothing happens. Or the waypoint icon is grey and won't respond. Or you get airborne, the drone is sitting there in a stable hover, and the app tells you FWD and BKWD are unavailable. And now you're wondering whether your Mavic 4 Pro is broken, whether you missed a setting, or whether DJI just decided today isn't your day.

Almost none of these are hardware failures. Waypoint flight has a stack of preconditions, and the app is not always good at telling you which one you tripped. Here's how to work out which one it is.

What FWD and BKWD Actually Mean

This is the first thing to clear up, because it's the single most common misunderstanding, and it sends people looking in entirely the wrong menu.

FWD and BKWD are not waypoint direction settings. They are not a forwards-versus-backwards route option, and they have nothing to do with replaying a mission in reverse. FWD and BKWD refer to the aircraft's forward and backward obstacle sensing — the vision sensors looking out the front and back of the airframe. When the app says FWD and BKWD unavailable (or the fuller version listing LEFT/RIGHT and UP/DOWN too), it is telling you the obstacle avoidance system in those directions is offline.

The Mavic 4 Pro uses omnidirectional obstacle sensing built on six fisheye vision sensors plus a forward-facing LiDAR unit. Vision sensors need light. When there isn't enough of it, they stop producing usable depth data and the app reports them unavailable. That's why this warning shows up overwhelmingly at dawn, at dusk, and after dark — the exact hours a lot of us want to fly.

Other things that produce the same message:

  • Dirty, smudged, or obstructed sensor lenses. A fingerprint or a bit of condensation on one fisheye is enough.
  • Aircraft still on the ground. Some sensor states are reported as unavailable pre-takeoff and clear once you're airborne.
  • Sport mode. Sport disables obstacle avoidance by design.
  • Obstacle avoidance set to Off in the safety settings.
  • Firmware in a bad state after an interrupted or partial update.
  • A genuine sensor fault — rare, and usually persistent across lighting conditions and locations, which is how you tell it apart from the rest.

Why it matters for waypoints: obstacle sensing is part of what makes automated flight safe, and DJI gates automated behavior on sensing availability. If your sensors are down, expect the app to be less willing to let you run a route unsupervised.

The reverse-route question, answered. DJI's own documentation for Waypoint Flight states that waypoints cannot be executed in reverse order. You can choose which waypoint the mission starts from — pick waypoint 2 of four and it flies 2, then 3, then 4 — but the sequence always runs forward. There is a separate end-of-flight action called Back to Start, which returns the aircraft to the first waypoint after the route completes. That is not the same thing as flying the route backwards, and if you've been hunting the menus for a reverse toggle, stop. It isn't there.

The Five-Minute Diagnostic Checklist

Run these in order before you change any settings. Most waypoint failures resolve in the first four.

  1. Is the aircraft airborne? DJI's documentation says the aircraft must be in flight to create waypoints. Users repeatedly report an "aircraft not in flight" style refusal when trying to mark points on the ground. Map-tapping to place points can work pre-flight, but the controller button method needs you in the air.
  2. Do you have a solid GNSS lock? Not a partial one. Wait for the app to report strong satellite reception and for the Home Point to be recorded. Waypoint flight is entirely dependent on positioning.
  3. Check for a GEO zone. Look at the map layer. DJI blocks waypoint creation inside restricted airspace — including zones where you're legally allowed to fly manually.
  4. Check your battery level against the route length. Low-battery RTH is enforced at the firmware level and will abort a mission mid-route regardless of flight mode.
  5. Check storage. If you've set camera actions at waypoints and the card or internal storage is full, the capture side of the mission fails even if the flight path runs.
  6. Check firmware parity. Aircraft, remote controller, and DJI Fly all need to be current and matched. A mismatch is a classic cause of features silently disappearing.
  7. Check your distance from the start. DJI states you must be within 10 km of the starting waypoint to run a mission.

Why the Waypoint Option Is Greyed Out

One quirk worth knowing: several pilots report that the waypoint interface only becomes fully available after you've created your first mission while airborne. Once it's been used in flight, planning offline gets easier. If the feature looks half-present on a brand-new aircraft, fly it once and create a throwaway two-point route.

Why Missions Fail to Record or Save

Route data is not stored on the aircraft. It lives in DJI Fly's storage on your controller or phone. That has consequences people learn the hard way:

  • Reinstalling DJI Fly can wipe the waypoint library.
  • Switching to a different controller means your saved routes don't come with you.
  • Firmware and app updates have, in various reports, left users without their saved missions.

Routes auto-save periodically while you plan, but auto-save is not a backup strategy. Save deliberately to the library, and if a mission took real effort to build, export or back it up before any update.

The other recording failure is subtler. Each waypoint stores altitude, aircraft heading, and gimbal pitch at the moment you set it. If you're setting points by tapping the map rather than flying to them, altitude defaults apply — DJI's default waypoint altitude is 50 meters relative to takeoff. Points you never explicitly set an altitude for are not "unset." They're set to something you didn't choose. Check every one. The Numbers You Can Rely On

These come from DJI's published Waypoint Flight documentation:

  • Maximum waypoints per route: 200
  • Speed range: 0.1 to 15.0 m/s, default 2.5 m/s
  • Default waypoint altitude: 50 m relative to takeoff point
  • Maximum distance from starting waypoint: 10 km
  • Signal-loss actions: RTH (default), Land, Hover, Continue
  • End-of-flight actions: RTH (default), Land, Hover, Back to Start

Two conflicts to watch. First, if your RTH altitude is set below the terrain or obstacles along your route, an RTH triggered mid-mission — by low battery or signal loss — will climb to that altitude and then fly a straight line home through whatever is in the way. Set RTH altitude for the highest obstacle on the route, not the launch point. Second, choosing Continue on signal loss means the aircraft finishes the route with no link to you. That's a deliberate decision, not a default to leave alone. Both live in the safety settings covered in our Mavic 4 Pro settings guide.

What We Could Not Confirm

Being straight with you, because a wrong number here gets someone's drone hurt:

  • We could not confirm a published minimum battery percentage that blocks a waypoint mission from starting on the Mavic 4 Pro. Low-battery RTH will interrupt a running mission — that is documented behavior — but we found no verified pre-flight battery gate.
  • We could not confirm a published maximum total route distance for the Mavic 4 Pro beyond the 10 km start-point radius.
  • We could not confirm a specific numeric GNSS satellite count that DJI requires before waypoint recording unlocks.
  • We could not confirm the exact wording of Mavic 4 Pro waypoint refusal messages. The strings quoted around the forums come mostly from Mini 4 Pro and Mavic 3 users, and DJI revises them between app builds.

Where a number isn't published, test it yourself in a wide open area with plenty of battery, and write down what your aircraft actually does. That's better data than anything we could guess at.

The Short Version

FWD and BKWD unavailable means your vision sensors are down, and nine times out of ten the cause is light level, not a fault. Waypoints need the aircraft airborne, a solid GNSS lock, and airspace that isn't GEO-restricted. Missions live on your controller, not your drone, so back them up. And the route only runs forwards — there is no reverse playback in DJI Fly, only a Back to Start end action.

Work the checklist top to bottom. The failure is almost always earlier in that list than you think.
