Best SD Cards for the Mavic 4 Pro: What V30 Actually Means
The speed rating that matters, how much capacity a real shoot consumes, and why buying the fastest card on the shelf will not unlock the format you want.
Memory cards are the least interesting purchase in drone ownership and one of the easiest to get wrong — usually by spending too much on the wrong specification rather than too little.
DJI’s stated requirement for the Mavic 4 Pro is microSD, microSDHC or microSDXC, with Class 10 / U3 / V30 or faster recommended. That is the whole requirement. Everything else on the packaging is either a different measurement of the same thing or a number that will not help you.
V30 is the only rating that matters
Cards advertise a large “up to 200 MB/s” style figure on the front. That is read speed — how fast you can pull files off. It is irrelevant to whether the card can keep up with a camera.
What matters is sustained write speed, and that is what the V rating measures. V30 guarantees at least 30 MB/s of continuous writing. V60 guarantees 60. V90 guarantees 90.
Now do the arithmetic that actually decides this:

The highest card-eligible mode on this aircraft needs about 23 MB/s sustained. V30 clears it with room to spare, and that room is the point: sustained write performance degrades as a card fills and heats up, so you want headroom rather than an exact match.
A faster card will not unlock ALL-I. H.264 ALL-I on the Mavic 4 Pro needs roughly 150 MB/s sustained — more than even a V90 card guarantees — and DJI restricts that format to the 512GB Creator Combo, where it writes to the internal SSD. What a faster card does buy you
Not nothing — just not what people expect. V60 and V90 cards genuinely help with offload speed through a fast reader, which matters if you are moving hundreds of gigabytes regularly. They also hold up better at sustained high frame rates and tend to be built to tighter tolerances.
If you shoot occasionally and offload once a week, V30 is the correct purchase and the extra money is better spent on a spare battery. If you are moving footage every evening on a multi-day job, the faster card pays you back in time.
How much capacity you need
Work from recorded minutes, not flight minutes.
- H.265 standard costs roughly 1.3 GB per minute of recording.
- H.264 standard costs roughly 0.7 GB per minute.
A realistic day — say four batteries, rolling on maybe a third of the flight time — is around 45 minutes of recording. In H.265 that is about 60 GB. A 256 GB card covers roughly three or four such days before you need to offload, which is the right amount of comfort for most people.
The cards worth buying

V30 is the speed class you actually need — anything slower will drop frames on high-bitrate recording. 256GB is the sweet spot for a day of shooting.
The sensible default. V30, 256GB, and one of the most widely used cards in existence — which matters more than it sounds, because failure modes on common cards are well documented and recovery tools handle them well.

If that scenario is a real risk for you — client work, a trip you cannot repeat — buy two 256 GB cards rather than one 512 GB, and swap between batteries so a single failure never costs you the whole day.
Habits that prevent lost footage
- Format in the aircraft, never the computer.Formatting through the drone’s own menu produces the file structure the firmware expects. A computer format can produce a card that mounts fine and misbehaves during recording.
- Format before every shoot, not after. Offload, verify the files opened, then format at the start of the next session. Formatting immediately after offloading is how people discover a failed copy with no source left.
- Check which storage you are recording to before takeoff. The Mavic 4 Pro has internal storage and will happily use it. The remaining-capacity readout tells you which one is active in about one second.
- Retire cards on a schedule. Flash memory wears out. A card that has been formatted weekly for three years owes you nothing.
- Buy from a retailer you trust. Counterfeit cards are a genuine problem — they report a large capacity, write slowly, and corrupt data once you pass their real size. A card that seems unusually cheap for its capacity almost certainly is.
