How to Fly the DJI Mavic 4 Pro: Your First Flight, Start to Finish

The hour before you leave the house, US registration and TRUST, what the two sticks do, and a five-exercise progression for flight one.

Somewhere in your living room there is a $2,000 aircraft in a box, and you are trying to decide whether to take it outside. That hesitation is a good sign. The pilots who bend props on day one are almost never the nervous ones.

Here is the honest truth about the Mavic 4 Pro: it is a very forgiving aircraft. It holds position in wind, it sees obstacles in every direction, and it will fly itself home if the link drops. Most of what can go wrong on a first flight goes wrong on the ground, before the props ever spin. So we are going to spend real time there first.

The hour before you go anywhere

Do this indoors, at a table, with no time pressure. Rushing this hour is the single most common cause of a bad first flight.

  1. Wake and charge the batteries. DJI ships Intelligent Flight Batteries in a dormant state. Press the power button once to activate a battery before it will take a charge. Charge every battery and the remote controller to full — you want a stress-free first flight, not a low-battery warning at 200 feet.
  2. Remove the storage cover. The gimbal protector must come off before you power the aircraft on. If the gimbal tries to initialize against a cover, you get an error and, in the worst case, a strained motor.
  3. Unfold the arms. Front arms first, then the rear. Note that unfolding the right rear arm powers the aircraft on by default, and folding that same arm starts an automatic power-off countdown. That is a useful tell: if the drone is unfolded, it is on.
  4. Activate. Power on the controller, launch DJI Fly, and follow the activation flow. You need an internet connection for this, so do it at home on Wi-Fi, not in a field with two bars of LTE. Activation also binds the controller to the aircraft automatically.
  5. Update the firmware. A prompt will appear after activation. Run it, keep both units powered, and do not exit the app mid-update. New units frequently ship with firmware several revisions behind, and out-of-date firmware is responsible for a surprising share of "my drone is acting weird" posts.
  6. Set the controller's time zone, date, and Wi-Fi. Boring, but a wrong clock causes odd log and file-naming behavior later.

Registration and the rules that actually apply to you

The Mavic 4 Pro has a takeoff weight of roughly 1,063 grams. That is well over the 250-gram threshold, so in the United States it must be registered — there is no recreational exemption at this weight.

Everything below reflects US requirements as we understand them at the time of writing. Rules change, and rules outside the US are different in substantial ways. If you are in the EU, UK, Canada, Australia, or anywhere else, your national aviation authority is the only source that counts. Check it before you fly.

  • Register at FAADroneZone. Five dollars, valid for three years. You must be at least 13. Registering under the recreational exception and registering under Part 107 are separate things — a recreational registration does not authorize Part 107 flying.
  • Recreational or Part 107? If you are flying purely for personal enjoyment, the recreational exception applies. The moment the flight furthers a business purpose — even indirectly, even unpaid — you need a Part 107 remote pilot certificate. "I posted it on my company's Instagram" counts. If there is any chance you will monetize this, get the certificate early.
  • Take the TRUST test. Recreational flyers must pass The Recreational UAS Safety Test before flying. It is free, takes about half an hour, and you cannot fail it — wrong answers are corrected until you reach 100%. Save the completion certificate as a PDF and keep a copy on your phone: administrators do not retain records, and if you lose it, you retake the test.
  • Remote ID is handled. The Mavic 4 Pro broadcasts Standard Remote ID from the factory. There is no module to buy and nothing to bolt on.
  • Mark the aircraft. Your registration number must be on the exterior before you fly. A label maker or a paint pen is fine.
  • Carry your paperwork. Registration certificate and TRUST certificate, digital or physical, on you during flight.

The operating rules for recreational flight: stay at or below 400 feet above ground level, keep the aircraft in unaided visual line of sight, never fly over people who are not part of your operation or over moving vehicles, always yield right of way to manned aircraft, and get authorization through LAANC before entering controlled airspace. Night flight requires anti-collision lighting visible for three statute miles — which is not something to sort out on your first evening.

The drone will no longer stop you. In January 2025, DJI changed its GEO system in the US. Areas that were once hard "Restricted Zones" are now "Enhanced Warning Zones" — the app shows you an alert based on FAA data, and then it lets you fly anyway. The software guardrail that used to catch airspace mistakes is gone. Check B4UFLY or a similar app before every flight, and treat an in-app warning as a stop sign, not a speed bump. Airspace compliance is entirely on you now.

Choosing a location that does the work for you

Your first field should be boring. Specifically: a large open park or field, at least a few hundred feet from buildings and trees, no power lines overhead, no crowds, and — this matters more than people expect — no metal underfoot. Compass interference from rebar, buried utilities, playground equipment, and steel bleachers is a real cause of erratic behavior right after takeoff.

Check the wind. The Mavic 4 Pro is rated for gusts up to roughly 12 m/s, but "the aircraft can survive it" and "you should learn in it" are different statements. Pick a calm morning. Wind at 100 feet is always stronger than wind at your face.

Take off from a hard, flat surface or a landing pad. Grass is acceptable; loose dirt, sand, and gravel are not — debris gets pulled into the motors and sandblasts the lenses.

The takeoff sequence

Run the same order every time until it is muscle memory. This is the short version; the full sequence lives in our Mavic 4 Pro pre-flight checklist.

  1. Storage cover off, all four arms unfolded, propellers seated and undamaged, battery clicked fully in.
  2. Lenses and obstacle sensors clean — a fingerprint on a vision sensor degrades obstacle avoidance.
  3. Power on the aircraft, then the controller. Let the gimbal complete its self-test without touching it.
  4. Stand roughly 10 feet behind the aircraft, with the camera pointed away from you.
  5. Wait for a healthy GNSS lock. DJI Fly will show satellite status; do not launch until it is solid and the app reports the aircraft is ready. If it asks you to calibrate the compass, do it — but only when prompted, not as a habit.
  6. Confirm your Return to Home altitude is set higher than the tallest obstacle around you. This is the setting that saves aircraft.
  7. Use auto takeoff for flight one: tap the takeoff icon, then press and hold to confirm. The aircraft climbs to a low hover and waits.

Manual motor start exists — the combination stick command, both sticks pulled down and inward — and you will use it eventually. For flight one, let the software do it.

What the two sticks do

Your controller ships in Mode 2, which is the standard almost everyone learns. The division is clean: the left stick moves the aircraft without tilting it; the right stick tilts it.

The scroll wheel on the controller's shoulder tilts the camera up and down. That is the whole system. Everything cinematic you will ever do is a combination of those five inputs.

Leave the flight mode switch in Normal — not Sport — for your entire first session. Cine mode softens the stick response for smooth footage, and Sport disables obstacle avoidance entirely. Your first flight, as a progression

Do these in order. Do not skip ahead because something felt easy.

  1. Hover, hands off. Climb to about 15 feet and let go of the sticks for a full minute. Watch how little it drifts. This exercise exists purely to convince your nervous system that the aircraft is stable.
  2. Altitude only. Left stick up, left stick down. Climb to 50 feet, descend to 15, repeat three times. Get a feel for how much stick travel equals how much speed.
  3. Yaw in place. Left stick left and right, slowly, at a stable altitude. Rotate a full 360 degrees in each direction. Notice the moment the aircraft faces you — this is when your controls appear to reverse, and it is the number one cause of new-pilot crashes. The stick inputs have not changed; your perspective has.
  4. The square. With the nose pointed away from you the whole time, fly a square using only the right stick: forward, right, back, left. Small sides, maybe 50 feet. This teaches you that roll and pitch are independent of heading.
  5. The figure eight. Now combine right-stick forward with gentle left-stick yaw so the nose follows the direction of travel. This is the first thing you will do that looks like flying rather than driving, and it is the foundation of every orbit and reveal shot you will ever film.

Landing properly

Bring the aircraft back to a hover roughly 10 feet above your landing spot and let it stabilize before descending. The reason to pause: below about 10 feet the drone enters its own downwash, and a fast descent through disturbed air makes it wobble. Descend slowly and it settles cleanly.

Auto landing is the safest option for flight one — tap the land icon, press and hold to confirm, and the motors stop on their own once the aircraft is down. If you land manually, hold the left stick down after touchdown until the motors spool off.

Then, in this order: power off the aircraft, power off the controller, fold the rear arms then the front, and put the storage cover back on. Reversing that order — controller off first — can cause the aircraft to briefly think it has lost its link.

The mistakes almost everyone makes

  • Flying until the battery warns you. Land at 30%. Not 20%, not "when it beeps." Wind on the way home costs far more power than the trip out.
  • Trusting the 51-minute number. That figure is measured hovering in still air. With wind, movement, and recording, plan on meaningfully less and treat the manufacturer number as a ceiling you will never see.
  • Flying backward toward something. Obstacle sensing is excellent, but it is a safety net, not a pilot. Never reverse into airspace you have not visually cleared.
  • Letting it get small. Losing visual contact with the aircraft is both a legal violation and the fastest route to disorientation. If you have to squint, come closer.
  • Chasing the screen instead of the sky. New pilots stare at the video feed. Look up at the actual aircraft, glance down at the screen. Reverse that and you will fly into a tree while framing a beautiful shot of a different tree.
  • Skipping the RTH altitude check. A Return to Home set below treetop height turns a safety feature into a collision.
  • Taking off from a car hood or picnic table. Metal surfaces confuse the compass and the downward vision sensors. Ground level, every time.

Your first flight should be dull. Twelve minutes, one battery, five exercises, a clean landing. Do that three times and the aircraft stops feeling like $2,000 of risk and starts feeling like a camera you happen to fly.
